The Young Academy of Sweden is delighted to invite the Young Academies of the world to nominate Laureates for the first Torsten Wiesel Midnight Sun Award For Distinguished Achievements in Promoting Science. The award will be given to one or several person(s) or an organization that has done extraordinary contributions to explain and promote science to the public and/or decision makers. The awardee(s) can be of any nationality and will be selected by a committee formed by the Young Academy of Sweden following nominations. The award will be presented at a ceremony in Stockholm, including a public lecture in May 2016.
The prize was announced in 2014 to mark the 90th birthday of Nobel Laureate Dr. Torsten Wiesel, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1981 together with David Hubel for their discoveries concerning information processing in the visual system. The Midnight Sun Award is inspired by the natural phenomenon of the never-setting sun that is a cherished feature of the Swedish summer.
