VYA mission
Vietnam Young Academy (VYA) aims:
- To promote science and technology, education and improve science policy, and research environment in Vietnam by providing a platform for discussions on topics of national and global importance.
- To maintain active links with Vietnamese scientists and international science organizations, become a platform of knowledge exchange between Vietnam-based scholars and Vietnamese scholars working globally.

History
In 2008, when Prof. Nguyen TK Thanh was then a Royal Society University Research Fellow, she was nominated to represent The Royal Society at the Interacademy Panel (IAP) conference of young leaders in Science, Technology and Innovation at the World Economic Forum (“Summer Davos” meeting) “Meeting of the New Champions” in Tianjin, China.
This is the first time ever, young leading scientists were invited to World Economic Forum, this was a result of the great effort of Prof. Bruce Alberts (Editor-in-Chief of Science magazine) and Prof. Howard Alper, the Vice-President (Research) of the University of Ottawa from 1997–2006 and the President of the Royal Society of Canada (2001 to 2003)
The Global Young Academy (GYA), grew out of discussions amongst top young scientists who attended this meeting.
One of the major aims of GYA is to support the establishment, development of and cooperation and networking with National Young Academies (NYA).
Prof. Thanh has been an active member of GYA since its infancy, and she is passionate about Vietnam young scholars engaging in international arenas
On the 2nd November 2014, in Halong city, Vietnam, at International Workshops on Advanced Materials Science and Nanotechnology, with the support of Associate Professor Tran Kim Anh, who has always been supportive of young scholars in Vietnam, The Vietnam Young Academy (VYA) was founded.
The first step was to design a logo for VYA, bamboo is the symbol plant of Vietnam, we have an old saying: “Tre già măng mọc” that means “when bamboo plants are getting old, the new shoots will sprout”. Therefore, we will always have new young shoots.
We also have a saying: “Một cây làm chẳng nên non, ba cây chụm lại nên hòn núi cao” that means “One tree does not make a hill, three trees together will make a high mountain”. Hence the three young strong bamboos.
Square and circle present earth and sun in Vietnam folklore. We do not only have a beautiful blue sky but also a deep blue sea surrounded the country. The Red dot presenting Hanoi capital city, and the two Blue dots in the Pacific Ocean represents Hoang Sa and Truong Sa Islands.
The logo was designed by collective contribution of very early members and friends of VYA: Miss Thanh Lan, Master Duc Nam, Miss Nguyen Tue Anh, Mr Phan Vuong Tuan, Dr Le Duc Tung, Dr Luong Thi Bich, Dr Nguyen Bao, Dr Tran Quang Huy, Associate Professor Kim Anh and Professor Nguyen Thi Kim Thanh.
