UK and Viet Nam join hands to develop coastal blue communities – A story to celebrate today’s #WorldOceansDay (8 June)
Developing a sustainable and resilient coastal community inside the UNESCO-recognised Biosphere Reserve of Cù Lao Chàm – Chàm Island – that’s the main idea behind a pilot project linking the Hanoi National University of Education and the UK’s Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF).
“Blue Communities” is an interdisciplinary marine research collaboration programme between the University of Plymouth (UK) and partners in Viet Nam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
As marine environments face dilemmas such as supplying livelihoods and nutrition while avoiding over-exploitation, conserving biodiversity, or mitigating environmental pollution, marine planning for effective and sustainable use of marine resources and sustainable development of coastal communities becomes a necessary approach. It is hoped that new methodologies and initiatives discovered in this ‘Blue Communities” pilot project can be replicated in other coastal communities in Viet Nam.
