3 years Postdoctoral Research Associate in Advanced Flow Technology for Healthcare Iron Oxide Nanomaterials Manufacutring (UCL, Summer 2016)

    2015-12-16

UCL is based in the heat of London and is consistently regarded as one of the top Universities in the world (http://www.ucl.ac.uk/about-ucl). The successful candidate will work in the Labs of Professor Nguyen TK Thanh (http://www.ntk-thanh.co.uk) and Professor Asterios Gavriilidis (http://www.ucl.ac.uk/chemeng/people/gavriilidis/profile).

A major roadblock in the use of nanoparticles (NPs) in healthcare and nanomedicine is the lack of large-scale availability of high quality NPs with tuneable size, morphology and surface functionalization.

This multidisciplinary project addresses this challenge by aiming to develop robust scalable manufacturing routes. More specifically we will design and demonstrate laboratory scale processing platforms that lend themselves to expedient up-scaling, by exploiting the advantages offered by microchannel reactor technology. These platforms are expected to lead to higher NP quality (removal of batch to batch variation that has plagued research), consistency of product characteristics, enhanced process controllability and robustness. Although these technologies have broad scope and impact, the current focus is on advanced materials that have applications as therapeutic and diagnostic vectors. In this project we focus on the manufacturing of iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). Further, the control of the NP synthesis especially monodispersed functionalised NPs will offer new manufacturing applications for use in hyperthermia treatment for cancer (MNPs). UCL is at the forefront of the engineering approach to make nanoparticles, in magnetic hyperthermia.

The candidate is expected to have expertise in nanoparticle synthesis, chemical engineering, microfluidics, particle technology, chemical reaction engineering, and mass and heat transfer. Applications will be accepted until 30 January 2016. However, the post will be filled as soon as a suitable candidate is found.

Schlumberger Foundation Faculty for the Future program awards fellowships to women in STEM

    2015-11-15

The Schlumberger Foundation Faculty for the Future program, launched in 2004, awards fellowships to women from *developingand *emerging economies* to pursue PhD or post-doctoral studies in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) at top universities *abroad*. Awards in biological sciences are limited to interdisciplinary research between physical and biological sciences. The program's long-term goal is to generate conditions that result in more women pursuing academic careers in STEM.

The Faculty for the Future program is growing each year and has become a powerful community that today stands at 560 pioneering women scientists from 78 countries. *Ultimately grant recipients are expected to contribute to the socio-economic development of their home countries and regions by strengthening the faculties in their home universities, pursuing relevant research, or using their specific expertise to address policy issues*. The end goal is to attract and retain more young women in STEM.

    Launch of Research Software Survey

You will be happy to know that the GYA working group Global Access to Research Software (GARS) has directed its efforts to ensure equitable Global Access to Research Software (GARS) , in the spirit of Open Science. INASP, an organization with significant success in enabling developing countries to strengthen access to online journals and books, has joined hands with GYA-GARS to explore needs and demand for a programme to support this.
We are working to set up a programme that will go some distance in addressing the issues and solving some problems. We have just launched a Survey which will serve both as a baseline study and needs assessment.
We would greatly appreciate if you would kindly:

It should not take more than 10-15 minutes. We look forward to your cooperation.

2nd Worldwide Meeting of Young Academies: Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences on 16-18 November 2015

We are happy to announce the good news that the 2nd Worldwide Meeting of Young Academies will take place in 2015, co-organized by the Global Young Academy (GYA) and the Young Academy of Sweden (YAS) and hosted by YAS at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences on 16-18 November 2015. This is a great chance for all of us to meet and exchange experience, discuss successful YA activities and think about future networking and cooperation. There might also be a possibility for brief regional outbreaks.

In addition, the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) has offered to combine our meeting with a round table discussion on the role of science in sustainable development (probably on 17 November). Young scientists from the Young Academies would discuss the outcomes of the "UN Summit for the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda" (25-27 September 2015, New York) and more particularly the role of science in sustainable development with high level representatives of the EU and possibly other international organizations. In this case, the JRC would fund parts of the travel and accommodation for some participants (details still to be settled).

Since the 1st Worldwide Meeting in Amsterdam in late 2012, the international movement of Young Academies has grown extensively with many new Young Academies established (see the map on the GYA website at: http://www.globalyoungacademy.net/NYA/national-young-academies-1. Like in the 1st Worldwide Meeting, Young Academies from developed countries (and others who can do so) should self-fund their travel and accommodations to allow YAs from developing countries to participate through available funds.
